FAQ

Answers to some common questions we hear all the time.

How much does it cost?

One of the most common questions we receive, typically over the phone, is, “How much will it cost to frame this?” Our response is too vague and utterly frustrating for the caller: “Well, it depends.”

There’s no simple answer. A colleague put it best when he said, “Framing can be as elaborately complex or utterly simplistic as your tastes desire – and the cost can run the same gamut.”

With several hundred frames, dozens of mats, multiple glazing options, plus the ability to get creative with fillets, liners and other embellishments, nailing down a "typical" price is nearly impossible.

Rest assured, though, we do everything we can to keep our prices as affordable as they can be, with frequent upgrades that we usually don't advertise or charge for.

The cost of your project largely depends on the size and the materials chosen. In our shop at any given time, you will find art that ranges in size from a small 5” by 7” print, to an oil painting on rolled canvas that spans several feet, with prices that vary accordingly.

Materials range from simple to simply extraordinary. From a basic black moulding to a very sophisticated moulding made with gold leafing and oxidation that is an art in itself.

The glazing also comes in several variations. There’s plain, clear glass with a protective coating that screens ultraviolet light to avoid fading over time, to museum quality glass with a non-reflective coating. And there’s acrylic, with similar features.

Likewise, there are many variations in the matting. You can choose acid-free paper, fabric mats, mats that differ in thickness, specialty mats with unique finishes (a dimpled golf ball surface, anyone?), and spacers that keep the glass from touching the art when there is no mat.

We also use state-of-the-art equipment in the assembly of the piece - like a computerized mat cutter, a compression driven glass and foam cutter, and a frame joining machine called an underpinner, among many other tools. (Pam, our resident engineer and tool geek, will run off to Home Depot on the flimsiest of excuses.)

In addition to materials and our operations, there’s the people part – designers with art backgrounds and an extraordinary eye for color and composition, and frame makers with years of experience and an uncanny sense of precision. They love what they do, our customers love them, and it all results in beautiful framing.

No matter what we frame, whether the project costs a hundred dollars or thousands of dollars, it’s crafted with care, with professionalism, and with a standard of excellence that doesn’t vary based on price.

We will help guide you through the different components of frame design and we’ll make it fun and easy. Whether it’s the first time you’re framing something or the 100th time, we’re confident that we’ll be able to help you find something that not only meets your budget and your expectations, but something that when you pick it up you can’t wait to get on your wall.

How long does it take?

Our normal turnaround time is ten days to two weeks. Some items take less time, while more complex projects can take more. Rest assured, however, that we do everything we can to get your art back to you as soon as possible.

How will we know when our order is ready?

As soon as your order is ready for pickup or delivery, we will give you a call. If that doesn’t work after a couple of tries, we’ll send you an email. And we will always stay in contact with you if any issues arise or an unexpected delay occurs.

What if I’m not happy once I get my framed art home?

Please tell us! If there is something you don’t like, that is all you will see every time you look at your art. And all we care about is that you are happy. So, if we goofed, or if you wish you had spoken up when you were in the store, please bring the artwork back and we will do everything we can to make it right. If the remedy costs more, we will only charge you the difference. In circumstances like this, we don’t charge for most of what we do.

Do you sell mirrors?

Oh, yes! One of the delights of custom framing is the ability to take the humdrum and make it extraordinary. This is especially true of mirrors. Why go to a big-box store for an okay mirror, when for about the same price you can make that mirror sing with a frame designed to reflect your style and décor? We can make a custom mirror in any dimension using most any frame in our showroom.

What’s the turnaround time for a simple repair?

We often have customers come to us with a frame that has fallen off the wall and the glass is broken. Or a mat needs to be replaced, or a wire restrung. In cases like this we usually can have your piece back to you in a couple days. If we have to special order something, it might be a week, at most.

Do you stretch canvas?

Absolutely. We do plain wraps, gallery wraps and heat mounts when that is more practical.

How do you take care of my art?

Each piece we take in is kept in either an archival, acid-free plastic sleeve, or, in the case of stretched canvas, wrapped in plastic and kept in a secure bin for this purpose. It stays there until your art is prepared to go into its frame.

Do you ship or store art?

We often have customers ask us to safely store their art while their home is being remodeled, or even when there is the threat of a hurricane. In these instances, we pick up your art, blanket wrap it, and store it on the second floor of our temperature controlled, state of the art facility. We also wrap, box and ship art around the country and the world.

What if I’m traveling, can I pick up my art after I get back?

Of course. If there is a balance due, we ask that it be paid once your project is ready. But we are happy to keep it for you if you are away at the time. Alternatively, we can arrange to have your art delivered and installed, if a friend or relative can be there to receive it.

How do I hang my art?

Each piece comes with a set of picture frame hooks appropriate for its size and weight. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need some hanging advice or to schedule an installation.

Do you sell art?

We have a rotating collection of framed and unframed prints and posters in our two showrooms. The selection ranges from tropicals to traditional, wildlife to whimsical. We also carry a curated collection of art-inspired gifts.

If you have a question that wasn’t answered, please contact us or visit one of our showrooms and we’ll be happy to answer it for you!
